Every research requires Resources that will be used in Recycling and 3D Printing to create the products that are required to unlock a Research. Where can you see the Research? You can find it in the icon that looks like a magnifying glass.
Why is it important to unlock Research? You will not be able to gain access to some of the game features such as the Observatory, Challenges, Garbage Islands, etc. if you will not be able to complete Research. (See photos below)

Will I earn a reward after I unlocked a Research? Absolutely YES! Each time you unlock a Research, there's a corresponding reward such as shorter recycling and 3D printing times, opening new Garbage Islands, and Crew will smuggle more plastics.
Research can also speed up Collecting Rate, increase Ship Speed and increase Cargo Capacity.
How can I unlock a Research? You would need to complete through Recycling and 3D Printing the required amount of product in each Research. In the example below, you need to produce 35 chargers and 100 plastic bundles to unlock Order Rewards 2.
